Live Oak, (approximate population 9,000) is the most prominent town in North-central Florida, a region described as the "Original Florida." It is the county seat of Suwannee County (approximate population 40,000), just off I-10 at the junction of US Hwy 90 & 129, west of I-75. It is midway between Tallahassee and Jacksonville, a one and a half hour drive to either. To our south is Gainesville and most of Florida's most famous tourist attractions. One hour to our north is Valdosta, Georgia and Moody Airforce Base. People go for the outdoor life in the Suwannee River Valley, which seems to have been created just for the enjoyment of its natural beauty and attractions. Freshwater springs, lakes and five rivers make it a water sports playground. A few minutes away in any direction are sparkling streams that invite you to put in your canoe. Take a dip in one of the many springs, or, if you feel adventurous, visit an underwater cave. Certified divers from around the world indulge in the sport of cave diving, plunging into the crystal-clear springs water. Fishing is a prime pastime in rivers with bass, bream, catfish, and even, the occasional sturgeon. Long growing seasons, good soil, significant solar potential, low heating costs, abundant water and great hunting and fishing offer ample opportunity for self-sufficient homesteading or just quiet, independent country living enjoyed by many residents of the region. In recent years, the Suwannee River Valley has begun to be known as Florida's new horse country. Inflated property values and high tax assessments in south and central Florida have prompted horse enthusiasts to move their operations a bit farther north, to the green pastures of Suwannee, Hamilton and Lafayette Counties. You are welcome to share the county and the natural beauty of our wonderful area. Write, call, or - best of all - visit us here at the Suwannee Valley Real Estate office in Live Oak.
